Mechanics of Elastic Bodies

Mechanics of three-dimensional elastic bodies is an essential basic for the computation and calculation of structural systems in civil engineering. Students are guided into the basic theories of elastostatics in order to compute and evaluate deformations and stresses for structural system under external loads.

Acquisition of competencies

Successful students of this module…

  • know the general three-dimensional terms for mechanical stresses and strains, as well as their link via the linear elastic material law (Hooke’s law). They are able to perform simple stress-deformation-computations in matrix notation (Voigt Notation).
  • know different methods to solve statically indetermined truss systems. They are able to evaluate the practical applicability of those methods and to use them purposefully on complex systems.
  • are able to compute and evaluate multi-axle stress states of complicated beam systems. They know different yield criteria and are able to apply them dependent on the material choice.
  • are able to summarize their analysis results written and oral in an established scientific way.
  • know different methods for stability analysis. They are able to apply those purposefully on elastic truss systems and evaluate the results.
  • gain transferable expertise to research and work out independently complex, theoretical relations.

Form of teaching

The module „Mechanics of Elastic Bodies“ is not a contact class, that is to say instead of lectures and exercises you will be given materials and help for you own personal study. We provide all learning materials in German language clearly structured on the learning platform ILIAS.

Evaluation

The exam is according to PO 15 a seminar work (Seminarleistung). The exam consists of a written homework and its presentation (10 minutes) with ensuing discussion (10 minutes). The homework may be written and presented in English language.
