Doctoral Training at IBNM

STRUCTURED DOCTORAL PROGRAMS AT IBNM

IBNM has a long history with structured doctoral programs. We have successfully completed research activities within the International Research Training Group IRTG 1627 (ViVaCE) and the Lower Saxony Doctoral Program on Multifunctional Active and Reactive Surfaces and Interfaces (MARIO).

THREE DIFFERENT PATHWAYS TO A DOCTORAL DEGREE

The first is on the traditional teaching assistant employment of doctoral candidates:

  • These candidates are involved in teaching activities within our Bachelor- and Master-programs during the first years. However, suitable freedom for own doctoral research is provided. Graduation on this path in general takes about five years

Doctoral research on a project, typically third party funded e.g. by the German Research Foundation (DFG) or industrial partners:

  • The duration for graduation takes about four years.

Doctoral research within a coordinated doctoral program, e.g. DFG Research Training Groups:

  • Main idea of coordinated research projects is on collaborative interdisciplinary research within a group of 10 to 12 doctoral candidates, trained by an interdisciplinary group of principal investigators within an international and intercultural environment. The funding for doctoral candidates is limited for three years.
