A micro-mechanically motivated approach for modelling the oxidative aging process of elastomers

The goal of the project is to establish a model for the ageing behavior of rubber compounds based on a micro-mechanical approach. Such a model will account for the complex non-linear behaviour of the polymer network due to network degradation (scission) and post-curing (secondary network formation). The local ageing evolution accounts for the chemical oxidation process and the oxygen diffusion process through a set of suitable differential equations describing the change of key network parameters, such as cross-link density and average polymer chain length. A suitable transfer of these approaches into a spatial formulation will finally enable finite element computations of complex rubber geometries.
