Structural monitoring and damage detection has become a growing area in research and development, as witnessed by the increasing number of relevant journal and conference papers. To this end, a crucial challenge is the development of robust and efficient structural identification methods that can be applied to identify key parameters and hence, cause change of structural state.

The problem of structural system identification using measured dynamic data lies at the heart of condition assessment, and is considered as difficult class of inverse problems in structural mechanics.

Usually, system identification problems are treated as optimization problems with the objective to minimize errors between measured and predicted data.

Thus, this research develops a structural identification technique based on a sophisticated modified harmony search algorithm to deal with a variety of structures ranging from structures as simple as two dimensional shear frames to as complex as offshore wind energy conversion devices.
